Smartwatch Button MIM Manufacturing: Assembly and Testing

Button Design and Materials

Smartwatch button manufacturing uses 316L stainless steel or titanium for premium devices. Buttons require tactile feedback (1-3N actuation force), water resistance (IP68) and cosmetic surface finish. Travel 0.2-0.5mm.

Silicone gaskets require precise groove dimensions for reliable sealing. Surface finish: satin through tumbling or mirror through polishing.

MIM Process

MIM produces buttons with snap-fit undercuts and sealing grooves in one operation. 316L sintered to 96% density. Post-sintering tumbling for satin finish. PVD coating for color options. Economical above 5,000 units.

MIM advantages: net shape complex geometry, no secondary machining, consistent quality across production batches.

Assembly and Testing

Gasket insertion, contact dome placement, snap-fit assembly. Testing: actuation force profile, IP68 pressure test (1m/30min), cycle test (50,000 presses), and leak testing with vacuum chamber.

Force-displacement curve recorded for each button. Visual inspection under microscope for cosmetic defects.
