Laptop Hinge MIM Cam Manufacturing: Torque and Cycle Testing
Hinge Components
Laptop hinge manufacturing uses MIM cam mechanisms for consistent torque. Torque specification: 3-6 Ncm opening, 2-4 Ncm closing. Cam materials: hardened 440C or 17-4PH stainless. Sleeves from SS 303 Swiss CNC.
Spring washers provide preload. Bracket from SS 304 MIM for net shape mounting features.
| Component | Material | Process | Function |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cam | 440C/17-4PH | MIM | Torque generation |
| Sleeve | SS 303 | Swiss CNC | Rotation shaft |
| Bracket | SS 304 | MIM | Mounting |
| Spring Washer | Spring steel | Stamping | Preload |
MIM for Cams
MIM produces cam profiles with net shape accuracy (±0.02mm). 17-4PH stainless heat treated to HRC 40-45 for wear resistance. Sintered density >97%. Tumbling for edge break and consistent surface.
MIM advantages: complex lobe profile, no secondary machining, multiple cams per mold for efficiency.
| Parameter | MIM Capability | Achieved |
|---|---|---|
| Cam Profile | Net shape | ±0.02mm |
| Hardness | Heat treatable | HRC 40-45 |
| Density | Sintered | >97% |
| Surface | Tumbled | Ra 0.8 |
Testing
Automated torque vs angle measurement. Dynamic cycling: 24/7 accelerated testing. Torque degradation <30% after 20,000 cycles. Environmental: -10°C to 60°C. Salt spray for corrosion. Vibration test for shipping.
Torque consistency ±15% across the product lifetime. Cpk >1.33 for critical torque specification.
